Behind the Scenes: A Little About What Goes into Putting Together an Open Studio Party

Would you like a little peek behind the scenes as I put my Open Studio Party together for this year?

Above, you can see me delivering my painting, “Year of the Rooster” to the Verge Center for the Arts. The Verge puts together the Sac Open Studios Tour every year in September for TWO weekends. Yes, there are over 200 artists participating in the Tour! The artists are grouped geographically and assigned a weekend. This makes it easier for you to see artists in close proximity to each other.

The reason I’m delivering this painting to the Verge is because they put on a Preview Show of all the artists in the Open Studios Tour. The Show will be on display for the whole month of September. It’s a great way for you to whet your appetite and to see which artists’ studios will be on your priority list to see.

The Verge is also awesome because they print up a full-color 80-page Guide of the Tour. Each artist is listed with their info and their art pictured. They are also  indexed by category and by media, and maps are provided showing the locations of the artists’ studios.

The Sac Open Studios Tour Guide also provides:

  • more information about the tour,
  • artist spotlights,
  • demonstration information (hey, you might recognize a certain artist with the initials M.G. featured here!),
  • kids & families activities,
  • local businesses who support the Tour,
  • and of course, artists’ ads, giving more information about them (wha-at? whose got an ad on page 47, right before the 2nd Weekend Listing?!)

But that’s not all, no, that’s not all (in the words of Dr. Seuss who shares my birthday).

I’ve cleared the walls to make room for all the artwork to be displayed. Bare, but open!

Well, first painting up! It’s getting exciting! Will I ever get it all done in time?
