Happy Father’s Day!

Some of the best memories come from shared projects between parents and children, like building sand castles on a sunny beach with the merry waves of the ocean rolling in behind them. A cheerful banner with a scallop, a starfish, and a crab (you can also just make out the tentacles of an octopus hidden in a fold) flaps in the breeze. And a family of turtles gathers together nearby on the sandy shoreline.

(Yeah, I know that a family of turtles would probably never gather together, but that’s the miracle of art: you can portray a feeling through things that you can’t necessarily find in real life.)

A warm hug to all the Dads out there, who do so much to make our lives memorable.

This painting is a throwback to an earlier time of experimentation for me. I was working on a glazing technique. The models were my husband and son. It was a special day, which we have had the luck to re-create on several occasions. But you don’t need the ocean or turtles to create your own special moments together. You just need to take a little time and have a little fun.

Here’s to your own version of “A Day on the Beach”.
