Have you been wondering how it would turn out? Now you can see the finished painting, my version of Picasso’s “Woman in a Red Beret “. Sotheby’s Auction House has a great blog post on Picasso’s painting that they recently auctioned off. You can see the Picasso piece below.

The portrait I painted was inspired by Picasso’s work, but the woman I painted I only knew in my mind. Still, Picasso’s complete embrace of his instincts and leaving convention behind fueled my own artistic voice. Organic spatters and smears of paint inspire me far beyond classical composition and technique (but the old rules come in handy on the second go-round, for pulling the whole thing together).

I threw out my self-doubt and tried to live up to Picasso’s free-spirited example. It was enjoyable and went faster than most of my artwork.

The woman who appeared was a creature of the technological age, but with style and self-assurance. She, too, breaks the old rules. She invites the world to come into her world, rather than plead her case at its doorstep.

She’s also young and hungry and more than capable of taking the world by storm.

I’d like you to meet “Woman in a Red Raspberry Beret “, my title, influenced by the Prince song. You can read all about that in this previous post.

Thank you for joining me in this process.

You won’t guess what I’m up to next!
