Red Beret Work in Progress Video

Work in Progress picture from video of Melani Grube applying ink to her version of Pablo Picasso's "Woman in a Red Beret". You can see the artist's hand using a nib pen and a partially completed woman's face and beret, as well as a base of random paint smears and spatter in blues, violets, and lime greens.

Would you be inspired by a $70 million painting?

I was.

But it wasn’t about the money (though the auction sale total did amaze me). Really when I saw Picasso’s “Woman in a Red Beret”, the piece recently auctioned off at Sotheby’s, it was the undiluted, unapologetic emotion of the image that got me. He wasn’t exactly in love with this woman anymore.

But life and emotions are complex and deep. And Picasso didn’t try to mask it or waver from the style that he had evolved into. He honored his gut feeling, insisted on his artistic voice.

And yeah, it worked. So worked.

So, this is a still from the Work In Progress video of my take on this woman in a red beret. And you can see the video here (swipe left to see video on your phone or click the arrow on the right to see the video on desktop/laptop). I am having a different experience than Picasso and painting a different woman, someone who I am just meeting from my deep consciousness. But I feel like she’s been hanging out there for some time, waiting for me to muster up the courage to honor my gut and insist on my own artistic voice.

Does following your gut come easily to you?

Up next: The finished version, with my own title, “Woman in a Red Raspberry Beret”.
