These fantastical creatures, like a blend between a donkey and a rabbit, were inspired by the music of Camille Saint-Saens. The title of this section of the music, “Long-Eared Personnages”, at first made me say, “What?” But once I listened to it, I thought I understood. The music sounds like the braying of donkeys, which Saint-Saens somehow makes sound nice. I could only guess that he was taking a good-natured jab at music critics (long ears). They are adorable and entertaining, after all.
