Want to build a website you’ll love? With all the details and possibilities, where do you start?

I asked myself, “What am I all about? How will this site reflect what I’m about?” At first, the technology and practicalities of building the site loomed large and in the way of the design. But I pulled back and stepped away from the screen and got “real” and tactile with this mood board, thanks to the inspiring book, “How to Style Your Brand”, by Fiona Humberstone.

It was such an enjoyable process, creating the mood board. I loved collecting all the things- objects, photos, web images, patterns, ribbons, cards- that I thought reflected me and my style. I love so many things, but this process made me ask myself what really felt like “home” to me. What fit me just right. My open mind is attracted to new and diverse styles, but some styles and images were not really “me”, though I could appreciate and admire them for others.

All that helped focus me as I designed and worked on my website. It led me towards the color palette I would ultimately use. And best of all, it kept me inspired as I wrestled with the technical challenges of building this site. I always had my favorite things close at hand to remind me of why I was doing all this. The mood board formed the foundation for all the work that followed.

Now, I have a site that looks like me and where I like to go and spend my time, creating and interacting with you, my creative community.

Have you had experience with mood boards? What about flat lays? What secrets have you found helpful in creating on the inter webs?
